Das Wetter

Das Wetter in Dortmund ist Scheiß!
I still don't have internet in my dorm so I have to come to the library to do anything. I'll put something of value up here when I can do it in the comfort of my room. So far though, my time at the Universität has not been a pleasant experience. The weather is terrible (freezing, raining, sleeting, hailing, snowing, windy, I live a mile from my class, the library and the cafeteria, etc...) and because I came in the middle of the Deutsch class for the exchange students, I'm the odd one out.
But it's definitely getting better. Yesterday we went to see The Reader auf Deutsch (Der Vorleser) and I thought it was pretty good but still not worthy of the Oscar people said Slumdog cheated it out of. Slumdog was better. I was surprised that I could understand almost everything for at least the first half of the film and at least half through the rest of it; it was a good experience. I met some of the other students from the other levels of the Deutsch class and today I had lunch with some of them and then we went to a cafe called the Sonnedeck (Sundeck) and oddly enough the sun did make a brief appearance through the seemingly endless mass of clouds above the glass roof. Tonight I think I'll try the party at one of the student bars; a different dorm hosts a party each night. I went Monday and had a good time but Tuesday morning i felt like dying so at least I know where my limit is with Deutsch Beer now.

    Hey Mike!

I am so glad you made to Germany safely. It sounds like you are having a great adventure so far, even with the bad weather. I am sorry you have not had a pleasant experience so far. I am sure it will get better as the month continues on. I would hate to be the odd one out but you are a sweet guy and i'm sure you will makes friends in no time. The description of the coffee shop sounds awesome. You should take pics of it if you go back there. How was the part? I hope you did not get another hangover. I must go...but I am glad you are doing okay. I miss you here and think of you often. Keep your head up and take deep breaths everyday....you will okay.

P.S.-My cousin,Jean Collins, studied at the same university you are at. She lived there for five months as well. She went to Davidson college and when through their study abroad program. Just thought you might find this interesting.

The weather may be shitty, but it can't last forever. An adventure must have its ups and downs, or else it would be boring and monotonous and you wouldn't have any stories to tell!!! And hey.. if something really terrible or embarassing happens, just post it to give us some excitement here at home :)
